Built by someone who cares about new driver safety.
DriveReady exists because passing a knowledge test and being ready to drive are two different things.
Some people are taking the test for the first time. Some are new to Canada and learning provincial rules. Some are experienced drivers who haven’t opened a handbook in years. Whatever the situation, good preparation matters — and DriveReady was built to provide it.
And if you’re the one in the passenger seat beside a new driver, this was built for you too.
- 30 years, Edmonton Police Service
- Retired Inspector
- 7 years, City of Edmonton Office of Traffic Safety
My background
I’m Scott McDonald, founder of DriveReady.
I began my career as a Provincial Highway Patrol Officer in Central Alberta. One of my first experiences in highway patrol was responding to a fatal collision involving a semi-truck and a train.
That experience, and many others that followed, gave me a firsthand understanding of the consequences that can result from decisions made on the road. It also shaped my long-term interest in driver behaviour, education and traffic safety.
I went on to serve 30 years with the Edmonton Police Service, working across a wide range of roles, from patrol and criminal investigation to recruitment, employee development and research. I retired as an Inspector.
My education and professional development included studies in Police Sciences and Criminal Justice at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Alberta, now Mount Royal University, along with University of Alberta certificates in Human Resource Management and Management Development for Police Services.
After policing, I served for seven years as Senior Speed Management Coordinator with the City of Edmonton’s Office of Traffic Safety, working alongside researchers, analysts and traffic safety engineers.
Across those roles, I developed a practical understanding of how people learn, how skills develop through structured practice, and how meaningful feedback can influence performance. I also saw repeatedly that knowing the rules is only part of becoming capable and confident behind the wheel.
Why I built DriveReady
I wanted to put that experience to use. DriveReady is the result.
The knowledge test comes first. Before a new driver can begin supervised practice on public roads, they need to pass the required knowledge test and earn their learner’s licence. DriveReady’s province-specific practice questions, study tools and test simulations are designed to help with that preparation across Canada, in English and French where applicable.
But passing the test is only one step.
Once a learner has their licence, they need time behind the wheel with a parent, family member or instructor alongside them. That person is watching, coaching and trying to keep track of what the learner needs to work on next. It is a harder job than it looks, and most people doing it have no structured tools to help.
That’s why DriveReady includes Supervised Drive, a feature designed specifically for the person in the passenger seat and the learner behind the wheel.
Supervised Drive gives the person alongside the driver a structured way to prepare for each session, choose the skills to focus on and track progress across drives. The learner knows what is being observed before the drive starts and can review how the session went afterwards.
The goal is simple: make practice more purposeful for everyone involved.
People learn differently. Giving someone the right knowledge, an opportunity to practise and honest feedback gives them a better chance at improving.
That principle guided much of my career in policing, employee development and traffic safety. It also shaped the way I approached DriveReady.
The knowledge test preparation helps learners understand the rules of the road. Supervised Drive gives the person alongside them a better way to make practice purposeful.
Neither replaces good instruction.
Both make it easier.
